#Survival Guide: PMT, Hormones and Periods - Aspergers Girls Worse Enemy!

Image
It's no secret that we all have Periods, apparently it's the 'most natural thing in the world' a girl can experience and is a symbol of finally becoming a woman!  What they don't tell you in your handy health class is that your boobs feel like the size of bowling balls and are sensitive or tender, your stomach feels like it's in a vice and your back constantly aches, Bloating and feeling Fatter than normal and if all that wasn't bad enough prepare yourself for crying at any given time, feeling depressed and moody and just generally craving anything sweet, deep fried or covered in loads of chocolate.  Periods are somewhat a taboo subject even now in the 21st century, it's something to do with the fact that people really don't want to understand or even acknowledge that blood comes from the intimate area of your body every single month with or without warning.  The best representation of what a period can do to you! They arrive with th...

Saying goodbye to a loved one and dealing with Grief in an Aspergers Way

It's the hardest thing to ever have to do in your life. To say goodbye to someone who you love and accept the fact that they are going to die.  But with Aspergers, what is the right way for you to deal emotionally and physically with your grief and safely coming to accept that someone is dying or has died.  There is no right way to do this, everyone grieves in different ways.  Some people calmly accept this fact and process it before moving on past it, others grieve in a destructive manner and some never stop grieving.  Depending on your relationship with the person who is terminally ill or dying in any circumstance can make you feel like you have lost a part of your heart, like it's been ripped from your chest.  Grief is a powerful emotion that changes you as a person and with autism is there any way to really understand the emotions you are feeling let alone describing them to others. There is also the people around you, family and fr...

Preparing For Hospital Visits - Surgery and Appointments

Image
Knowing that you may have to go to Hospital for any reason can scare the hell out of normal people, but when you're Aspergers it can send you spiralling into a Meltdown.  Hospitals are not the enemy! The Hospital might be bigger, with more sensory information to process, sick people and well it's just not a nice environment to be in general but it is a place that we have to go from time to time against our will.  For whatever reason you have landed yourself into hospital, through a referral from the GP or if you're unfortunate enough to be in A&E it can seem like preparing for the worst news you're ever going to hear in your life. But don't threat, as I have some helpful advice to avoid those anxiety attacks, Medical Jargon confusion and making sure you feel comfortable in a strange smelling environment. I have been unfortunate enough to be in and out of Hospitals since I was 15 years old for many a different reason to do with different aspects of my He...

Anger Management - How to deal with Aspie Meltdowns Safely

Image
We've all had those moments in our lives where we've turned into a Monster or the guy above for no apparent reason. Usually we can blame it on little things like Pre- Period Hormones (PMS) or normally Frustration or Anxiety that manifests itself into a downward spiral where it seems normal to lose control.  When this happens, however it can lead to some serious outcomes. The Rage that you feel doesn't just effect you as a person, whoever is in the line of fire can be faced with a someone who is losing control on themselves. If you are someone like me who goes into a severe Meltdown, you'll notice that you black out and that you'll also try to injure yourself (self harming) or harm someone else.  This is when you need to think, is this an anger issue or something much deeper that maybe connected to a mental health problem such as Depression.  It's ok to admit that you have depression and other issues and it is common for people with Aspergers to live...

Being Your Own Organiser

Image
Getting used to Organising your everyday Life can be difficult! Especially as in School they try and teach you it but you don't really put anything into practice until at least you're at University or in Employment!  But knowing that no longer can you be a child and have to step up into Adulthood (which by the way SUCKS) with Appointments, Classes, Deadlines and even just everyday things all need to be Organised to the point that your Computer Desktop is neatly Organised with all your files labelled under different activities and work (Thats me by the way).  We've all seen characters that seem Neurotic and a little bit crazy and lets face it the Queen of this Organisation and Neat Freak that has to be Monica from Friends.  But before you mock her for what seems to be her insecurities or even Aspergers qualities ( I have a theory that Ross and Monica are actually Aspergers Siblings!) what we can take away from the over the top character  is the organis...

Doctors & Tackling The Awkward Chat

Image
Going to see the Doctor can be painfully awkward, especially if you don't know who you are going to be seen and treated by!  Talking about issues to do with your body to a unfamiliar person is enough for someone to just say under the covers and send another person (who you trust) to go and get you some over the counter medicine from the Chemist down the road along with a Barley Sugar Twist for being a good patient!  But sometimes you know you have to bite the bullet and just pick up that phone (yes our arch-nemesis!) and make a routine or emergency appointment!  Doctor's surgeries aren't the best place to be, they are full of gems and usually people coughing and spreading germs left and right. So before you even get in the room with your doctor you're already stressed to the max. I usually have a fail safe way of combatting that and it is in a earlier post, the link to is below:  The Doctors:   http://aspergersgirlguide.blogspot.co.uk/2013...

Be Your Own MasterChef

Image
I enjoy cooking and making food to eat that will not only give me that warm loving feeling but also whoever might be eating my food that i've prepared. But as a Aspergers person there is some sort of fear about going into the kitchen and preparing food for themselves, maybe it's the basic fear of hurting yourself with either a knife or burning yourself or it's just the confusion of what to eat. You don't have to a Top Chef or even a good cook all you need is the confidence in the kitchen.   Over the years I've watched numerous cooking programmes with some of my favourite Chefs cooking meals that were complicated and seem impossible!  But along came Jamie Oliver, The Hairy Bikers and even the lovely Gok Wan - who has hung up his fashion accessories and decided to teach us how to make Chinese food that is healthy and really yummy. I was inspired that I could make a meal in under 30 minutes sometimes on a budget that satisfied my cravings and even mad...
