#Handbook: Believing in Yourself

Image
Self Doubt is something that we all have to face whether Autistic or not. It's a never ending and continuous cycle that can be due to low self esteem, depression and anxiety and in the end is a hard battle to fight. All those negative voices that circle in your head telling you the same old lies over and over again can be hard to ignore, but knowing that you have come so far from where ever you started can be the light in a sea of darkness.  This is something that I live with due to having severe Depression and Chronic Anxiety, I've come so far in the last decade of my life from being in a mental health unit for a whole year after having the worst experience of my life at school.  I've touched on my experiences at school in previous blog posts where I described what happened to me and how it had made me a stronger person later on in my life but I still hear those negative comments they creep into my mind and stay there taunting me over and over, willing me to giv...

Opening Old Wounds - Painful Memories and the Positives of Revisiting Them

Image
Some memories are just too painful to revisit There are memories that are just to hard to bare for whatever reason they are locked away in a secure part of your mind never to see the light of day - like Pandora's box it should never be opened. But what happens when you are ready to open up to some of these memories and look at them in a different way?  This is something that I've had to do recently, it's been ten years since I was able to explore memories of when I was really ill in great detail without the aid of old journals or clouded by medication.  A lot has changed since I was fifteen and I've achieved a lot since then but since carry around all the painful emotions and memories associated with that time.  I've written about my mental health and how as a teen I was gravely ill, much more than I actually realised at the time. In a way my teenage self was deluding herself into thinking that I was fine, that this was just a blip and that I would b...

#Survival Guide:Contraception, Contraception, Contraception

Image
It can be an absolute nightmare to find the right contraception for you. It's not just about the fact that you might be sexually active but the reasons for going on any form of contraception are varied and even understanding what method you want can be utterly confusing and you just want to give up and eat chocolate and ice cream under a duvet instead.  Like millions of women around the world, periods can be the worst experience in their lives and every month they rear their ugly head and turn us into complete and utter horrible humans for at least 7 days (sorry!) but fear not as there is a way to manage, make them lighter and even stop them all together.. thank you contraception!!!  Choosing the right one however takes a lot of research and a lot of time thinking can I handle a needle in my arm or something going into my lady area?  Yes there are many choices all available with different hormones floating around your system plus side effects that'll make y...

#The Handbook: Learning to Love and Respect Yourself

Image
Loving and respecting yourself is an important thing, it's something that you keep developing as you grow as a person but it is the foundations to who you are and helps you to understand who you are as a person inside and out!  Being confident and comfortable with who you are mentally and physically resonates from within yourself and then outwards to others around you, this includes how you feel about being an Autistic person.  There is no such thing as 'perfect', the media and society want you to strive and aspire to be perfect but lets face it, if everyone was perfect then life would be ultimately boring!  Being classed as not good enough has a negative effect on your mental health which then knocks onto your physical health and the way you perceive yourself is vitally important and it isn't for everyone else around you it's actually only for you and you alone.  I know this from experience, from negative labels being placed on me because I didn't fi...

#Survival Guide: PMT, Hormones and Periods - Aspergers Girls Worse Enemy!

Image
It's no secret that we all have Periods, apparently it's the 'most natural thing in the world' a girl can experience and is a symbol of finally becoming a woman!  What they don't tell you in your handy health class is that your boobs feel like the size of bowling balls and are sensitive or tender, your stomach feels like it's in a vice and your back constantly aches, Bloating and feeling Fatter than normal and if all that wasn't bad enough prepare yourself for crying at any given time, feeling depressed and moody and just generally craving anything sweet, deep fried or covered in loads of chocolate.  Periods are somewhat a taboo subject even now in the 21st century, it's something to do with the fact that people really don't want to understand or even acknowledge that blood comes from the intimate area of your body every single month with or without warning.  The best representation of what a period can do to you! They arrive with th...

Emotions, Feelings and Where to Put Them....

Image
Emotions or feelings are something that we all have and can not hide from!  No matter how hard we try not to let them escape or cause chaos in our lives, they are always going to be there and it's hard to deal with them when they arise.  The thing about being Aspergers or Autistic is that when these emotions arise we don't know how to deal with them or register what they are. It's frustrating and to be able to communicate these emotions when you possibly don't understand what they are can be even more infuriating.  I've covered meltdowns and how they are usually triggered from the build up of stress, anxiety or frustration towards a situation or bottling up feelings that have been simmering away beneath the surface without letting them out in a safe and controlled manner.  The thing is we are not robots and neither are we designed to not have emotions, because everyone does.  Knowing what they are and where to put them is not that easy to do a...
